Understanding Soil

Soil composition plays a vital role in plant health. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just starting out,
understanding soil is the cornerstone of cultivating thriving gardens.

Sandy Soil

This soil is typically light, dry, and warm - and tends to be more acidic. It has larger particles and feels gritty to the touch. It drains quickly and can be low in nutrients.

Loamy Soil

Loamy soil is a balanced mixture of sand, silt, and clay particles. It has excellent drainage, moisture retention, and nutrient content. It's ideal for a wide range of plants and is considered the gold standard for gardening.

Peat Soil

This soil is primarily composed of partially decomposed organic matter. It has high acidity and retains moisture well. It's commonly used as a soil amendment to improve structure and water retention.

Clay Soil

Typically considered a "heavy soil," this soil has smaller particles and feels sticky when wet. It holds moisture well, but can become compacted - leading to poor drainage and aeration.

Chalky Soil

This soil contains high levels of calcium carbonate, tends to be more alkaline, and may have poor nutrient availability.

Silt Soil

This soil contains up to 80% silt, and includes sandy silt loam and silt loam. It has medium-sized particles and feels smooth and slippery when wet. It has good moisture retention, but can become compacted like clay soil.

Pruning & Maintenance
